The hearing in Georgia may not have gotten a lot of media attention. But that doesn’t make the evidence any less important. Whatever you may think this story means for *past* elections, it absolutely matters for the future ones.
Remember a week or two ago, when Taiwan did their elections, and it was conducted entirely with paper and pencil? Ballot stuffing is a lot more difficult than manipulating computer code. Especially when everything is done right in the open on the same day it happened.
A federal court in Atlanta was hearing a case about Dominion Voting machines. No, this wasn’t Rudy Guiliani or what’s-her-name of ‘release the Kraken’ fame. This didn’t even have anything to do with the 2020 results. This is a case brought forward even before the votes were cast in 2020, and NOT by the people you might expect.
A report written in 2021 (note the date!) but kept under seal by a Georgian court until June of 2023 figures prominently in this story. The 96-page Halderman report’s title is Security Analysis of Georgia’s ImageCast X Ballot Marking Devices.
ImageCast X happens to be made by a little company called ‘Dominion Voting Systems’. Perhaps you’ve heard of them.
That report alleged there were many vulnerablities by which the ImageCast X system could be easily exploited. The report was, as we say, unrelated to the 2020 election controversies involving the same system in the same state. The report was the collaborative effort of Professor of Computer Science and Engineering J. Alex Halderman (U of Michigan), and Drew Sringall, Security Researcher and Assistant Professor at Auburn University.
Gateway Pundit references what Professor Halderman wrote in his blog post on Wednesday:
Back in September 2020, the Court granted the Curling Plaintiffs access to one of Georgia’s touchscreen ballot marking devices (BMDs) so that they could assess its security. Drew and I extensively tested the machine, and we discovered vulnerabilities in nearly every part of the system that is exposed to potential attackers. The most critical problem we found is an arbitrary-code-execution vulnerability that can be exploited to spread malware from a county’s central election management system (EMS) to every BMD in the jurisdiction. This makes it possible to attack the BMDs at scale, over a wide area, without needing physical access to any of them.
Our report explains how attackers could exploit the flaws we found to change votes or potentially even affect election outcomes in Georgia, including how they could defeat the technical and procedural protections the state has in place. While we are not aware of any evidence that the vulnerabilities have been exploited to change votes in past elections, without more precautions and mitigations, there is a serious risk that they will be exploited in the future.
Note the reference to malware.
His follow-up tweet, after the report was released noted that Dominion’s security patches would NOT be installed to negate these known security vulnerabilities until AFTER the 2024 election… a decison made by Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger.
Gee, Mr. Raffensperger, what could possibly go wrong with your plan?
On Friday, Halderman made things interesting by performing something of a magic trick in the court room. Using nothing more than an ordinary pen (from the opposite counsel) he showed (left-wing) U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg how easy it was reset the device and slip it into safe mode where he could manipulate the files in the machine and mess with the tabulation.
What do the plaintiffs want? Nothing too drastic. They just want Georgia to move away from insecure voting machines to far more secure paper ballots.
